2015 Wedding Dance Songs
2015 Wedding Dance Songs
At the beginning of 2015 the popular wedding vendor resource known as the Knot issued its predictions for the hottest 2015 wedding dance songs. The Knot is considered a very trusted and widely used source for everything wedding. (Bella Ballroom is in the Knot’s Best of Weddings Hall of Fame, after all. 😉 ) Now that 2015 is coming to an end, I thought it would be fun to compare our experience working with wedding couples the last 12 months at Bella Ballroom with the Knot’s projected hottest wedding dance song list from the start of the year. Let’s take a look!
The Knot’s predictions for the 11 hottest wedding songs of 2015:
“Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran
“Coming Home” – Leon Bridges
“A Sky Full of Stars” – Cold Play
“Uptown Funk” – Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars
“Run, Run, Run,” – Kelly Clarkson featuring John Legend
“Lay Me Down” – Sam Smith
“Shut Up and Dance” – Walk the Moon
“Sugar” – Maroon 5
“I Want You to Know” – Zedd and Selena Gomez
“Only One” – Kanye West and McCartney
“Love You Like That” – Canaan Smith
While the Knot projected a great list of wedding songs and did not specify whether they were the hottest songs for the first dance, entrance, or reception, we only had four of the eleven songs requested by our students. Of the four songs, three of them have been requested multiple times. In order of popularity, the four most requested songs from our Bella Ballroom students from the Knot’s projection were “Thinking Out Loud”, “Sugar”, “Uptown Funk”, and “Shut Up and Dance”. Other popular first dance songs this year included some newer songs as well as some wedding classics:
“Latch” – Sam Smith
“Come Away With Me” – Norah Jones
“At Last” – Etta James
“Sway” – Dean Martin
“Crazy Love” – Van Morrison
“The Way You Look Tonight” – Frank Sinatra
“You are the Best Thing” – Ray Montage
“Love You Like I’m Gonna Loose You” – Meghan Trainor and John Legend
“Let’s Stay Together” – Al Green
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” – Elvis Presley and covers
“All of Me” John Legend
2015 also had artists that were very popular with our wedding couples:
“I Won’t Give Up,” “I’m Yours,” and “Lucky” – Jason Mraz
“Feeling Good,” “You and I,” “The Best is Yet to Come,” “For Once In My Life” – Michael Buble
Our Bella Ballroom team also choreographed for many wedding couples with international first dance songs. We got to work with beautiful Armenian, Persian, Arabic, and Latin music among other diverse genres.
Of all the first dance songs chosen in 2015, Ed Sheran’s “Thinking Out Loud” was by far the most requested. We had 35 couples choose “Thinking Out Loud” for their first dance, and at least 14 of the 35 couples used some or all of the choreography featured in Ed Sheeran’s music video for the ballad.
Beyond popular song choices, 2015 brought a variety of first dance trends. Many couples ventured beyond the traditional slow or waltz dancing and performed something different for their first dance. We worked with couples who wanted to do salsa, rumba, tango, or swing instead. We also hosted many couples that wanted to do a mash-up of songs and dances, starting out with a slow and traditional dance and busting into an upbeat surprise dance for their guests. Several dancers in training ventured to incorporate “wow factor” moves and tricks that were fairly easy to do but very impressive to prospective watching guests.
Overall, it was a fantastic year with a plethora of wedding couples meeting and exceeding their first dance goals. What will 2016 bring? I imagine we will see a mix of requests of songs that haven’t even been released yet, some 2015 crossover and tried and true classics. I’m excited to meet the newly fiancés of 2016 and helping them create their perfect wedding dance.
