Thinking Out Loud Wedding First Dance Song
When Bella Ballroom studio owner Jennelle called out “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran as the next popular wedding dance song I thought, “She’s probably right.” You may think that I’m making this up, but since I started this article five minutes ago, an inquiring bride walked in the studio and asked me about dance lessons here. She said that she and her fiancé have decided on “Thinking Out Loud” as their first dance. And would you believe that my first lesson today is for a couple wanting to emulate the choreography from the song’s music video? Coincidence? Maybe. But I think Jennelle is on to something! There is some magic within this song. Let’s take a closer look.
“Thinking Out Loud” was co-written by its English singer Ed Sheeran and song-writer Amy Wadge. It was released as a digital download on June 18th, 2014 as a promotion for Ed’s second album titled “X”. By November of 2014 the song rose to the UK’s charts number one single. The song gained popularity in the United States and has sold over one million copies in the US.
It comes to no surprise that Ed Sheeran describes “Thinking Out Loud” as a “walking down the aisle song.” It’s romantic ballad and lyrics promoting everlasting love create the feeling of eternal union between a pair. It’s no wonder that it is such a big hit with our dancing wedding couples.
On October 8th, 2014 a music video was released featuring Ed Sheeran and So You Think You Can Dance season 10 alumni Brittany Cherry. Ed originally wanted the music video to feature an empty ballroom with two dancers meeting and going off on the dance floor. He thought of hiring professional dancers and then got the idea to try dancing in it himself.
The music video was choreographed by married power team Tabitha and Napolean D’umo, collectively known as Nappytabs. Tabitha and Napolean taught dancers Brittany Cherry and Paul Karmiryan the choreography, and Brittany and Paul went on tour with Ed Sheran to teach him the technique and choreography behind the dance. Ed had to work hard to learn and incorporate dance skills, steps, and tricks as well as musicality and acting. He shared, “It was the most frustrating thing. Like, I’ve never wanted to quit something so much. There were points where I was like, ‘Nah. You guys do the video. I’m just going to stand in the background.’”
Despite the hard word and challenges Ed faced learning to dance, he ultimately starred in the video and said, “It really surprised me how much I enjoyed it. When you get the hang of it, dancing is the most fun thing in the world when you know what to do.”
While “Thinking Out Loud” has been very popular with wedding couples building their first dance with us at Bella Ballroom, each couple has had their own unique idea of how they’d like to use the song. Some aspire to look exactly like the music video, while others haven’t even seen the music video and just want to create something simple and special to the passionate song. Whatever your dancing dream may be, we are delighted to hear it out loud here at the studio and make it come true for your special day!
